Sigler Companies Earns Recycling Excellence Award for Third Consecutive Year
AMES, Iowa, March 3, 2009 – For a third straight year, Sigler Companies has received the Recycling Excellence Award from Mid-America Recycling Co., Des Moines, Iowa.
Sigler, composed of Sigler Printing and branded-apparel business Signify Promotions plus creative-services agency Innova Ideas & Services, was cited for its collection of more than 980 tons of recyclable material in 2008.
The honor builds on similar efforts in 2006 and 2007, and brings the total amount of recycled material to more than 2,550 tons over the three-year stretch. Sigler Companies president Beth Cross believes the award is representative of the organization's commitment to the environment.
"We've worked hard to positively impact the environment," Cross said. "We sincerely thank Mid-America Recycling for recognizing our efforts in recycling. The credit for this award also goes to our co-workers who are passionate about initiating and supporting our company's environmental programs."
Sigler Companies’ 2008 efforts are equivalent to the following resource conservation:
- Nearly 16,500 trees
- More than 6.75 million gallons of water
- More than 58,000 pounds of air pollution
- Nearly 4 million kilowatt hours of electricity
- Nearly 3,200 cubic yards of landfill space
Sigler Companies has established itself as a green printer through certification with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). Other green printing practices include concentric printing, a revolutionary technology that uses 25 percent to 35 percent less ink than the traditional printing process, and adoption of inks free of volatile organic compounds (known as no-VOC or VOC-free inks). Offices throughout Sigler Companies have also taken energy and water conservation steps to help minimize the impact on the environment.
Employees have led the charge for green initiatives by forming the Sigler Companies Green Committee more than a year ago. The group researches and provides guidance on best practices, in addition to sending out weekly tips electronically to help co-workers easily take eco-friendly steps at work and home. The group will continue to work to make changes throughout the company on a continually broader scale.
